Let’s face we are not teaching technology to the kids today. In most cases they know as much if not more than most of their teachers. As a technology teacher we need to teach them the proper way to use technology. This includes what software is out there, how to validate research from the web, and proper copyrighting of published works.
We need also to show them what careers are out there. Most students think that if you are a computer tech you only know how to work on the actually computer. We need to show them the different jobs that are out there. We need to explain the importance of becoming certified in the different software.
We as public school teachers also need to take the time to expose the kids to the software. Most of our public students are not able to afford 2k software to play around on; if they have developed skills and in interest in a career we need to show them how to get an educational version of the program.
Adobe has developed a curriculum that covers most of the above mention plus meets most local, state and national standards. This program will introduce and show student what they may be doing in several different careers. They will build a portfolio of their work. This is return could be shown to a company for a possible internship or a school as part of the entrance process.
This curriculum teaches them if followed time and project management. They also learn soft skills, which is so important when working with people. And lets face they are in a global market. It also teaches them how to give and take criticism on their work, this important because what you think your clients want may not be what they told you.
